The Secret My Birth Mother Tried to Bury

I grew up knowing I had been adopted.

My parents were loving, but one question followed me into adulthood:

Why had my birth mother given me away?

At twenty-two, I finally found her.

Her name was Diane, and she lived several states away with a husband I had never heard about.

Our first meeting lasted less than fifteen minutes.

She looked terrified.

“You cannot contact me again,” she said. “My husband doesn’t know about you.”

I asked why.

She only said that her marriage would fall apart if he discovered the truth.

So I left.

A year later, someone knocked on my apartment door.

A man in his sixties stood outside holding an envelope.

“I’m Diane’s husband.”

I froze.

Then he started crying.

Inside the envelope were old letters, photographs, and hospital paperwork.

He told me Diane had finally confessed everything.

But the truth was not what I expected.

He had known she had given birth as a teenager.

What he had never known was that she had spent years secretly trying to find me.

Diane had lied because she was ashamed—not because he would reject her.

In fact, he had discovered several unopened letters she had written to me but never mailed.

One read:

“I don’t know if I deserve to be in your life, but I have never stopped wondering who you became.”

Her husband told me Diane had recently become seriously ill.

“She’s afraid you’ll hate her,” he said.

Two days later, I visited her.

Neither of us knew what to say at first.

Then she whispered, “I’m sorry I ran away twice.”

I took her hand.

We couldn’t recover the lost years.

But for the first time, neither of us had to hide anymore.
