My Dad’s Dog Wouldn’t Stop Barking at His Coffin — When We Opened It, My Mom Nearly Fainted

My father passed away after a serious car accident.

His dog, Bella, had been acting strangely ever since. She barely ate, slept beside the front door, and kept searching the house for him.

I decided to bring her to the funeral because Dad had loved that dog more than anything.

My cousin agreed to watch her outside.

But just before the service started, Bella slipped out of her collar and ran straight into the chapel.

She stopped beside Dad’s coffin and started barking.

I tried to calm her down, but she wouldn’t move.

The funeral director suggested taking her outside.

Then I realized something.

Because of the accident, we’d arranged a closed-casket service. Nobody in our family had seen Dad since the hospital.

I asked for one final private viewing.

The director reluctantly agreed.

Mom and I followed him into a separate room.

He opened the coffin.

The man inside wasn’t my father.

He looked approximately the same age, but his face was completely different.

Mom nearly fainted.

The funeral director immediately checked the identification records.

Two deceased men had arrived from the same hospital, and their transfer paperwork had apparently been mixed up.

The service was postponed while everything was corrected.

I can’t explain why Bella behaved that way.

Maybe she was simply frightened and confused.

But when we finally held Dad’s funeral, she quietly lay beside his coffin.

And this time, she didn’t bark once.
