Finding Again the Friend Who Once Lifted My Soul

As a child, my father worked as the custodian at my school. Because of that, some classmates didn’t treat me with respect. But there was one girl in my class who always showed me genuine kindness. Her warmth felt like a beacon during those tough days. That same year, however, her family moved away, and I never heard from her again. Life carried on, but I held on to her kindness as proof that even one caring person can leave a lasting mark.

Twelve years later, I had become a lawyer. One day, while reviewing my schedule, I stopped in shock when I saw her name listed. Could it possibly be the same girl? When she entered the room, it felt as though time collapsed. She smiled, and in that instant, the distance of years vanished. As she began to speak, I realized that just as she had once been there for me, I was now given the chance to be there for her.

During our conversation, I learned that her life had not been free of struggles after leaving our school. Yet, she told me she often thought about that year — not because of the difficulties, but because of the small friendship we had built. What I believed was a quiet memory for me had also lived inside her all along.

In that moment, I realized something profound: kindness is never lost. Even the smallest gestures become part of another person’s journey. And when life circles back to reunite people, those acts of compassion return like gifts, reminding us of the extraordinary beauty found in simple human connection.
