My Stepkids Disrespected Me When Their Bio Mom Reappeared – They Called Me

I’ve been married to my husband, Tommy, for six years. He has 16-year-old twins, Jack and Lily, whose mother left when they were eight. When I came into their lives, we attended family therapy to ensure a smooth transition. I made it clear I wasn’t trying to replace their mom. Over time, we built a strong bond, and by age 12, they started calling me “Mom.”

For years, everything went beautifully—until their biological mother, Maggie, returned. At first, the twins were hesitant, but eventually thrilled. I supported their relationship, even as I felt a shift inside.

Then things changed. They began calling me Carol instead of Mom, ignored house rules, and said I wasn’t their “real mom.” The final blow came when they accused me of ruining their family. Tommy didn’t stand up for me. When I canceled our Disney trip to make a point, they called me jealous and selfish—and still, Tommy said nothing.

I packed my things and left. Days later, Maggie left again, and the kids realized the damage. They apologized, begged me to come home, and I forgave them—but my heart had changed. I told Tommy I was filing for divorce.

Now, Jack and Lily visit often, helping me rebuild our bond. I chose self-respect and emotional well-being over a marriage that lacked support—and in doing so, kept the love that truly matters.
