My Mother-in-Law Offered to Babysit for Free — But Her ‘Help’ Came With a Hidden Price

She once told me, “You don’t need daycare — I’m family. Bring him here every morning.” It sounded generous, but her version of “help” quickly came with strings attached.

I’d drop my baby off, and she’d call five times a day to “check in.” If I didn’t pick him up early, she’d guilt-trip me. When I offered to pay her, she refused — but added, “You can cook for us on weekends and maybe clean a little.”

So her free childcare really meant I’d work two jobs — mine and hers.

I politely declined and told her we were enrolling our baby in daycare. She exploded, accusing me of “robbing her of bonding time.” My husband tried to calm her, but it turned into full family drama.

Instead of arguing, I told her we couldn’t find an open daycare spot. Two weeks later, I shared some “good news” — my boss approved part-time remote work, so I’d stay home with the baby.

She was thrilled… until she realized I never asked her to babysit again.

Now she complains she “hardly sees her grandchild.”

But if bonding requires me to become an unpaid housekeeper, I’ll pass.
