The Nurse Who Never Came

Seventeen years ago, after having my first baby, I lay in the hospital with her beside me, completely in awe. That first night, a nurse came in and offered to take my baby to the nursery so I could rest. I refused—I just wanted to keep her close and stare at her.
The next night, exhausted, I asked another nurse if she could take my baby for a few hours.
She froze.
Then she said, “Your baby is supposed to stay with you. We don’t have a nursery… and no one would ever come take your baby from you.”
