I Had to Leave My Son’s Wedding — They Tried to Charge Me Extra for My Meal

My son recently married a woman I barely knew, as they live in another state. I met her just days before the wedding. While she seemed polite at first, she made a few comments mocking me for being vegan, which created tension early on.
I still attended the wedding for my son — he means everything to me. At the reception, there was no assigned seating, so I chose a table labeled for a “vegan option.” But when the food arrived, it looked spoiled. I asked for a salad, only to be told I’d have to pay extra because only one vegetarian meal had been arranged.
Feeling embarrassed and unwelcome, I stood up to leave. My son came over and said, “If you leave now, just forget us.” That shocked me. I calmly told him I came to support him, but I wouldn’t stay where I felt disrespected and served inedible food. Then I left.
Days later, my daughter-in-law called, accusing me of ruining the reception and hurting my son. She even expected an apology. I told her she had been disrespectful from the start. Now, two weeks later, I haven’t heard from my son.
I don’t want to lose him, but I also don’t think I was wrong to stand up for myself.
