My DIL Wanted to Use My Retirement Cruise as a Babysitting Service — I Gave Her a Reality Check

At 67 and newly retired, I planned my dream solo cruise for over two years. Every detail was perfect—the ship, the route, the excursions, everything. It was my special gift to myself before starting the next chapter of life.
Then my son got a big promotion, but it required a month-long overseas assignment. My daughter-in-law panicked about handling their three young kids alone and called me with a sweet idea: she wanted to join my cruise to “celebrate my retirement” and hoped I’d help with the kids onboard so she could relax too.
I smiled and agreed.
But instead of letting my long-awaited solo trip become a babysitting vacation, I quietly moved my cruise to the next month.
The day before the original departure, she arrived at my house with packed bags and excited kids. I sat her down and explained that I postponed my trip because I couldn’t enjoy myself knowing she was stressed. Then I invited her to stay with me for the month instead.
I handed her a to-do list: help arrange house painting, schedule a deep cleaning, shop for new curtains, and prep my home while I watched the kids.
I told her, “Since you wanted to share my joy, you can help me get everything ready while I enjoy time with the grandkids. Win-win!”
She was furious. My son laughed and called it genius, but warned me I may have started a storm.
Now she’s barely speaking to me.
Did I go too far?
