The Birthday Gifts That Made My Twins Cry

My twin boys, Noah and Mason, turned seven last weekend.

We kept the party simple—pizza, cake, balloons, and a few relatives at our house.

My sister, Lauren, arrived late carrying two large gift bags.

The boys ran over immediately.

“Can we open them now?”

Lauren smiled.

“Of course.”

They disappeared into the living room with the bags.

Less than a minute later, I heard crying.

At first, I thought they were fighting over a toy.

Instead, I found both boys sitting on the floor, staring at their gifts.

Noah had received an expensive remote-control truck.

Mason had received a pack of socks, two school notebooks, and a cheap plastic cup.

I looked at Lauren, confused.

She shrugged.

“Noah is easier to shop for. Mason needs to learn birthdays aren’t always fair.”

I was speechless.

The boys were twins. This wasn’t about comparing prices—it was obvious she had intentionally made one child feel less important.

I quietly took both gifts away.

Then I handed Lauren the truck.

“You can take this back.”

She looked offended.

I told her that if she wanted to give gifts to my children, she didn’t have to spend the same amount.

But she did have to treat them with equal care.

Later that evening, my husband and I took the boys out for ice cream and let each pick a small toy.

Mason stopped crying quickly.

But what bothered me most was that he had already started asking what he had done wrong.

That was the moment I knew I had made the right decision.
