We Adopted a 4-Year-Old Girl — Just a Month Later, My Wife Demanded, ‘We Should Give Her Back’

When we adopted Sophie, I believed we were finally becoming the family we had always dreamed of. The moment I met her, she ran into my arms like she already knew she belonged. I promised myself I’d never let her feel abandoned again.

But one night, everything changed.

I came home to find Sophie crying, terrified she was being sent away. Then my wife, Claire, said the unthinkable—we should give her back.

All because Sophie, a four-year-old child, had accidentally ruined her wedding dress with paint.

Claire called her manipulative. Said she was “ruining everything.” Then she gave me a choice: her… or Sophie.

There wasn’t a choice.

I chose my daughter.

Claire left that night. Weeks later, she tried to come back, saying she made a mistake. But the damage was done. Sophie had cried herself to sleep, thinking she wasn’t wanted again.

I couldn’t let that happen twice.

So I walked away—for good.

A year later, Sophie still holds my hand a little tighter, still asks if I’ll leave. But she’s laughing more now. Healing.

And every night, I remind her:

“You’re home. And I’m not going anywhere.”
