I Caught My MIL in My Closet—And My Fiancé’s Response Hit Me Like a Brick

I (28F) moved in with my fiancé (30M) last year. It’s his house, but we both treat it as our home. I contribute—decorating, cooking, cleaning, even paying part of the mortgage.
One afternoon, I came home early and found my future mother-in-law in our bedroom. Not just visiting—she was in our closet, going through my clothes. Startled, she casually said she was “checking if I had enough hangers.”
I was stunned.
When I asked my fiancé about it, he told me his mom has a key. “She helps out sometimes,” he said.
Helps out? I never asked for that. And going through my personal things doesn’t feel like help—it feels like a violation. When I told him how uncomfortable it made me, he brushed it off, saying she’s always been “involved.”
That didn’t make it better.
I asked him to take back the key, but he acted like I was being controlling. Meanwhile, his mom hasn’t apologized—she even suggested I should be “grateful” she cares enough to “tidy up.”
Now I’m stuck wondering: is this what my future looks like?
Because I signed up for a partner… not a permanent third person in our home.
