I Knit at Work to Pay My Dying Mom’s Bills—What Happened Next Left Me Shaking

I knit at work to help cover my mom’s medical bills. The yarn alone costs nearly $200, and every stitch feels like time borrowed for her. So when my coworker Sarah demanded a free blanket and I said no, things got ugly—fast.

“I hope your mother dies before you finish that blanket!” she snapped.

I couldn’t even respond. I just sat there, stunned, my hands frozen mid-stitch.

The next morning, my boss called me into his office.

My heart was pounding. I thought maybe Sarah had twisted the story, maybe I was about to get written up—or worse.

But the moment I sat down, he looked at me seriously and said, “I need you to tell me exactly what happened yesterday.”

Turns out, someone had overheard everything. Not just anyone—our HR manager.

They had already spoken to Sarah.

I explained the situation, still shaking. He nodded, then said something I didn’t expect: “What she said was completely unacceptable. We’re taking this very seriously.”

By the end of the day, Sarah was escorted out of the building.

Later, my boss stopped by my desk and quietly handed me an envelope. Inside was a small donation from the team—and a note that read, “For your mom.”

I broke down right there.

Sometimes, even in the darkest moments, kindness shows up louder than cruelty.
