After 50 Years of Marriage, I Asked for a Divorce — Then His Letter Broke My Heart

After more than fifty years of marriage, I decided I wanted a divorce.
At 75, I felt trapped, as though I had spent my entire life caring for others and never truly living for myself. My husband Charles, a loving and devoted man, couldn’t understand why I had become distant and angry. Every attempt he made to help only irritated me more.
Eventually, I asked for a divorce. Though heartbroken, Charles agreed because he wanted me to find peace.
After signing the papers, our lawyer invited us to one final dinner together. At the restaurant, Charles asked for the lights near our table to be dimmed and ordered a salad for me. I saw it as another example of him controlling my life and stormed out in anger.
That night, I moved out.
The next morning, Charles discovered I had left behind important medication and tried calling me repeatedly. Convinced he was manipulating me, I ignored every call.
Then came the devastating news: Charles had suffered a heart attack.
Rushing back to our house, I found a letter he had written. In it, he explained that he dimmed the lights because bright light hurt my eyes and ordered the salad because he cared about my health. Everything I had seen as control was actually love.
Through tears, I ran to the hospital and begged for forgiveness.
Thankfully, Charles survived.
In that moment, I realized the greatest mistake wasn’t loving him too much—it was failing to recognize how deeply he loved me.
