Protecting My Kids’ Privacy Taught Us All a Lesson

My ex and I have been divorced for two years and share two wonderful kids. When he started dating someone new, I thought she seemed kind—until she began posting photos of my children online.

At first, I politely asked her to stop, but she refused. When I checked her Instagram, I was shocked. There were countless public posts featuring my kids, including their names, school uniforms, and private family moments I hadn’t even seen before.

More than anger, I felt fear. In today’s world, protecting children’s privacy is essential, and seeing their lives shared so openly made me deeply uncomfortable.

I reached out again, calmly explaining that this wasn’t about personal feelings—it was about safety, respect, and boundaries. She insisted she was simply proud of them and wanted to share her new family with the world.

Realizing we viewed the situation differently, I spoke to my ex without blaming anyone. I explained the risks of exposing our children online and asked him to help establish healthy boundaries. At first, he didn’t understand, but after we talked through the potential dangers, he agreed.

Together, we spoke with his girlfriend as a united front. Thankfully, she listened. She apologized, admitted she hadn’t realized the seriousness of the issue, and immediately removed every photo.

We also agreed on one simple family rule: no one posts pictures of our children online without both parents’ consent.
