The Woman I Chose for My Grandson Was Already Part of His Past

I’m 70, and I’ve raised my grandson Josh since he was five. He grew into a hardworking, kind young man, but at 27, he spent nearly all his time working and never seemed interested in dating.

At the kindergarten where I worked, I met Allison, a warm and thoughtful teacher. She appeared perfect for Josh, so I secretly invited her to our home for tea.

When Josh entered the living room, Allison dropped the cake she was carrying.

“Allison?” he whispered.

She stared at him in disbelief. “Josh? She’s your grandmother?”

I looked between them, completely confused.

Then Josh took a deep breath. “Grandma, Allison is the woman I was supposed to marry.”

Years earlier, they had been deeply in love. But shortly before their wedding, Josh discovered that Allison had accepted a teaching position in another city without telling him. Feeling betrayed, he ended the relationship, and neither had contacted the other again.

Allison’s eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t leave because I stopped loving you,” she said. “My mother was seriously ill. I moved to care for her, but I was afraid you’d sacrifice your entire future for me.”

Josh admitted that he had never truly moved on.

I quietly left them alone to talk.

Hours later, they emerged holding hands. They didn’t pretend the past had never happened, but they agreed to begin again—slowly and honestly.

I had planned to introduce Josh to a stranger.

Instead, I accidentally brought the love of his life back home.
