At twenty-two, I thought my future with my fiancé, Elliot, was secure. Then a car accident killed my parents and left my five-year-old twin brothers orphaned.

I immediately became their legal guardian.

Elliot had promised we would face everything together, but once the paperwork was finalized, he revealed the truth. He demanded that I send the boys into foster care or cancel our wedding.

“I’m not ruining my life for someone else’s kids,” he said.

Instead of arguing, I calmly agreed to one final family trip to the state fair. Elliot believed I had chosen him and would give up my brothers afterward.

At the fair, he complained constantly while the twins enjoyed the rides and treats. When a photographer offered us a family picture, Elliot refused.

I smiled and told him he did not need to join us because he would no longer be part of our family.
