When my new husband, Nathan, and I left for our honeymoon, his mother, Diane, offered to watch my eight-year-old son, Lucas.
I was grateful. Lucas was from my previous marriage, and Diane had always acted welcoming toward him.
Two days into our trip, she called sounding frantic.
“Claire, you need to come home immediately. Something happened to Lucas. Don’t wait.”
Before I could ask questions, she hung up.
Nathan and I rushed to the airport and spent the entire flight terrified.
But when we reached home, Lucas opened the door himself.
He looked completely healthy.
I turned toward Diane, furious, but Lucas quietly pulled a folded paper from his pocket.
“Grandma said I shouldn’t show you this.”
It was a handwritten list of boarding schools, along with notes about tuition and enrollment dates.
Then Lucas told me Diane had spent the weekend explaining that newlyweds needed “time to build their own family” and suggesting he might be happier living somewhere else.
My blood ran cold.
Diane finally admitted the emergency had been invented because she wanted us home so Nathan could “deal with the situation.”
Nathan stared at his mother in disbelief.
“Lucas is the situation?” he asked. “He’s my son too now.”
He told her to leave immediately.
We later finished our honeymoon with Lucas included in a short family trip.
Diane eventually apologized, but trust took much longer to rebuild.
That experience taught me something important: anyone who marries a parent doesn’t simply choose a spouse. They choose the child too.
