I Lost My Fifth Child After My Husband Left Me for My Younger Sister – At Their Wedding, My 9-Year-Old Daughter Did Something He Never Expected

On the morning of my ex-husband’s wedding to my younger sister, our nine-year-old daughter, Amelia, asked me something I couldn’t answer.
“If Dad marries Aunt Lina, is she still your sister?”
Months earlier, I had discovered Ryan had been having an affair with Lina for nearly a year—while I was pregnant with our fifth child. I divorced him, later lost the baby, and three weeks afterward, Ryan and Lina announced their engagement.
I refused to attend their wedding, but Amelia went with my mother.
Hours later, my cousin called.
“You need to get here. Amelia stopped the ceremony.”
After the vows, Ryan and Lina planned a unity-candle ceremony symbolizing their “new family.” Amelia was supposed to light her candle from theirs.
Instead, she asked, “If this makes us one family, where does Mom go?”
Nobody could answer.
Then she looked at my mother and said, “You told Mom family supports family. Why didn’t Aunt Lina support her?”
When I arrived, Amelia was outside crying. Lina eventually approached and insisted she wasn’t replacing me.
Amelia looked directly at her.
“Then why do you call yourself my bonus mom? Are you still Mom’s sister?”
Silence.
Amelia picked up her candle and walked back inside.
“I came because you’re my dad,” she told Ryan. “I didn’t come to say what you did was okay.”
Then she took my hand—and we went home.
