I Tried to Hide the Price of a Dress From My Husband

My husband, Mark, and I had promised each other we would stop wasting money on clothes for a while.
We already had packed closets, and we were trying to save for a trip.
Then I saw the dress.
It was gorgeous.
Normally $349.
Sale price: $49.
I picked it up immediately.
When the sales associate came over, I whispered, “Please don’t mention the price when my husband gets back.”
She grinned.
“Got it.”
At least, I thought she did.
A minute later, Mark walked over.
The associate looked at him and announced loudly:
“Your wife just found a $349 dress for only $49!”
I froze.
Mark stared at me.
Then he looked at the tag.
I was already preparing my defense.
Instead, he laughed.
“That’s not spending money,” he said. “That’s practically stealing.”
I burst out laughing.
Then he added, “But if you buy it, I’m allowed one unnecessary purchase too.”
Fair enough.
We bought the dress.
Two days later, Mark came home carrying a huge box.
Inside was an expensive power tool he’d been talking about for months.
“How much?” I asked.
He smiled.
“Don’t worry about it.”
I just stared at him.
Then we both started laughing.
That was the day our “no unnecessary purchases” rule officially became:
If you find an amazing deal, at least be brave enough to admit it.
