We Created a Secret Fund for Our Daughter, but She and Her Husband Freaked Out

My daughter, married 3 years and now a stay-at-home mom to their first child, signed a prenup with a small settlement. Concerned she’d struggle financially if they divorced—especially after years out of work, like my niece did—we set up a “just in case” account. It’s a safety net for her, to be added to her inheritance if they stay married.

I planned to keep it secret, but my husband said she should know in case she ever felt trapped. We told her, stressing we love her husband and want them happy forever—this is just prudence, like the prenup.

She was touched but felt we were “rooting against” her marriage. Then she told her husband, and he’s furious, saying we don’t trust him. I explained it’s about protecting our daughter, no different from a parent’s instinct—just as he’ll always protect their child, we protect ours.
