At My Husband’s Funeral, I Opened His Casket to Place a Flower — and Found a Crumpled Note Tucked Under His Hands

I was 55, newly widowed after 36 years of marriage, when I found something at my husband Greg’s funeral that made my heart stop.

As I leaned over his casket to place a red rose in his hands, I noticed a small folded note tucked beneath his fingers. In the restroom, I opened it and read the words that shattered me: “Even though we could never be together the way we deserved… my kids and I will love you forever.”

Greg and I had no children. After years of infertility, he had always told me that I was enough. So who had written that note?

I checked the chapel security footage and saw Susan, a woman from Greg’s work, slipping it into his casket. When I confronted her, she claimed Greg had fathered her two children. Humiliated and devastated, I left without another word.

Later, at home, I read through Greg’s journals. Page after page, he wrote about our life, our pain, our love. Then I found entries about Susan—her failing company, poor shipments, and Greg refusing to do business with her.

With help from Greg’s friend Peter and his son Ben, I learned the truth: Susan had lied. Her children were her husband’s. She admitted she only wanted to hurt me because she blamed Greg for ruining her business.

That day, I realized something I’ll never forget: my grief was real, but so was my marriage. And Greg never stopped loving me.
