Learning to Be Parents Together

After my wife left shortly after our son was born, I raised him on my own. Now he’s 6, and she’s remarried—with no kids of her own. Recently, she said she wanted to take our son. I refused.
One day, during a visit, I heard a scream from his room. I ran upstairs and found him with a bruise on his arm. My ex looked just as shaken as I was—unsure, inexperienced, and scared.
In that moment, something shifted.
Instead of arguing, we focused on him. Over time, she became more involved, learning how to care for him, while I learned to let go of some control.
We’re not together anymore, but we’ve found a way to work as parents.
And for the first time, it feels like our son has both of us.
