I Refused to Pay for Someone Else’s Birthday Dinner, and Now I’m the Villain

My husband and I attended a colleague’s birthday dinner at a high-end restaurant. The next day, she texted: “Your share is $190 + tip.”
I was shocked but replied politely, saying the gift I brought should cover my part.
At work, things got worse. People were whispering about someone who “refused to pay.” I stayed quiet—until I saw my gift returned on my desk.
I still feel this was wrong. If you invite people out, especially to an expensive place, you should either make it clear in advance that everyone is paying or not expect both a costly meal and a gift.
Am I overreacting?
