Gia and Leila had spent ten years living with a silence that began when their older sister, Nora, died at just eleven years old. Though people called them twins, they never felt complete after losing the sister who had always been the heart of their family.
On their 21st birthday, their mother placed a small wooden box on the breakfast table. Attached was an envelope in Nora’s handwriting that read: “OPEN ON OUR 21ST BIRTHDAY.”
The box contained three ribbon-wrapped bundles prepared by Nora before she passed away. One was for Gia, one for Leila, and one for both of them.
Gia’s letter reminded her not to hide her feelings and encouraged her to keep singing and embracing life. Leila’s letter gently revealed that beneath her anger was fear and grief, reminding her how strong she truly was.
For the first time in years, the sisters opened up about how much they missed not only Nora but each other.
The final bundle contained a shared letter, photos, a paper crown, and a cassette tape. In her message, Nora begged them not to let her memory become the thing that separated them. She wanted them to laugh, celebrate birthdays, and continue living fully.
When they played the tape, Nora’s voice filled the room one last time.
“I loved you first. I loved you last. And I am still your sister.”
That day, they cut three slices of birthday cake—one for Gia, one for Leila, and one for Nora. For the first time in a decade, the empty chair felt less like a loss and more like a place reserved for love.
