The Notebook My Stepson Hid Under His Bed

My stepson, Ryan, stayed with us every other weekend and had always gotten along reasonably well with my fourteen-year-old daughter, Paige.

Then Paige suddenly changed.

Whenever Ryan was scheduled to visit, she became anxious and begged me to make him stay with his mother.

“Please, Mom. I just don’t want him here.”

She refused to explain.

One Sunday, while gathering laundry from Ryan’s room, I noticed several socks piled strangely beside his bed.

Underneath was a notebook.

At first, I thought it was homework.

Then I saw our names.

Pages contained notes about my marriage, our finances, arguments Ryan had overheard, and even private things Paige had told him. There were printed photos of rooms in our house and dates beside them.

I felt sick.

When Ryan returned, I demanded an explanation.

He immediately started crying.

His mother was trying to change their custody arrangement and had pressured him to collect information that could make our home look unstable.

Paige had caught him photographing documents weeks earlier. Ryan begged her not to tell because his mother had threatened to blame him if she lost the case.

That was why Paige wanted him gone.

She no longer felt safe being observed in her own home.

My husband was devastated when we told him.

He contacted his attorney immediately, while Ryan finally admitted everything.

We didn’t punish him by sending him away.

Instead, we made it clear that he was a child caught inside an adult conflict—and that our home would never require him to spy, choose sides, or earn his place.

The notebook was destroyed.

Rebuilding Paige’s trust took much longer.
