Why My Ex-Husband Turned Our Porch Light Green

My ex-husband, Daniel, and I still shared a house temporarily while sorting out finances after our divorce.

One evening, I came home and noticed he had replaced the porch bulb with a bright green one.

I wasn’t thrilled.

“You could’ve asked first,” I said.

Daniel shrugged.

“It’s for Dad.”

His father had passed away the previous year, but Daniel refused to explain further.

For several days, I assumed the green light had some private meaning between them.

Then our elderly neighbor, Mrs. Collins, stopped me while I was getting the mail.

“I’m glad Daniel finally put that light up,” she said.

I looked confused.

She explained that Daniel’s father had served in the military for decades and had always participated in a local tradition of displaying green porch lights to honor veterans and service members.

Every November, his father would replace his own porch bulb with a green one.

After he died, Daniel inherited the bulb but couldn’t bring himself to use it.

Until now.

That evening, I asked Daniel why he hadn’t simply told me.

He stared at the glowing porch and said quietly, “Because saying it out loud makes him feel gone again.”

For the first time since our divorce, I didn’t argue.

I just sat beside him on the steps.

We were no longer husband and wife, but grief had nothing to do with our failed marriage.

The green light stayed.

Sometimes an object that looks insignificant from the outside is carrying an entire memory for the person who put it there.
