My Wife Came Back From Her Annual ‘Girls’ Weekend’ With Her Sisters and Started Acting Like a Stranger – When I Found Out Why, My Stomach Turned

My wife came home from her annual girls’ spa weekend acting like a completely different person.

Claire barely ate, stopped reading bedtime stories to our daughter, avoided the kids, hid her phone, and slept in the guest room for six straight nights.

I became convinced something terrible had happened.

Finally, I called her sister Megan.

She told me Claire had secretly taken most of our kids’ college money to help their younger sister Rachel through serious financial trouble.

I was shocked—but relieved. Money could be replaced.

Then I called Rachel.

She laughed.

“Paul, I’m fine. I’ve never asked Claire for money.”

My stomach dropped.

Rachel revealed Claire had actually been unusually quiet during the spa trip and kept disappearing to make phone calls with Megan.

When I returned home, Claire was waiting on the porch.

“Just tell me the truth,” I said.

Her face crumpled.

“They found a lump. The biopsy came back.”

Everything suddenly made sense.

Claire hadn’t emptied the college fund. She had withdrawn money from our emergency savings because she didn’t want treatment delayed by insurance.

“I made Megan lie because I wasn’t ready to tell you,” she sobbed.

She admitted she’d slept separately because she knew she would fall apart if I held her.

I wrapped my arms around her.

“You should have let me be scared with you.”

Six months later, Claire was responding to chemotherapy—and we had finally learned that fear was something we needed to face together.
