I Refused to Let Anyone Steal What My Dad Left Me, and My Mom Made It Worse

I’m Mia (17). My dad died when I was 6, and the last thing he gave me was a gold necklace with a sapphire. I’ve kept it safe for 11 years—it’s the only piece of him I have.

My mom remarried, and her stepdaughters often took my things. Last week, my necklace disappeared. I found one of them wearing it. When I got it back, something felt off.

A jeweler confirmed it—it was a fake. My real necklace had been sold.

When I confronted my mom, she didn’t apologize. She said my “sister” needed money for school and that I was selfish. My stepdad even threatened to ground me if I kept pushing.

I broke down, yelled, and left. I’m now staying with my aunt.

Half my family supports me. The other half says I’m overreacting and should “choose family over things.”

But it wasn’t just a thing. It was my dad.

Now I’m left wondering… did I do the right thing by walking away, or am I really the problem?
